According to CNN this is NOT the first time this has been done. The aim is to help people who are otherwise unable to move (eg motor neurone disease, spinal chord injuries etc) interact with their environment via a smartphone or computer.

If you think about it, by the time Stephen Hawkin died he only had ONE muscle left that he could use and thus operate his speech computer with. That was his eye lid. Had that gone then he would have been completely cut off from the outside world

Hopefully this will help people in a similiar situation

If that is what they will actually use it for, it is a GREAT development! But as with everything else, in the near future there will be some freakish variations. Just stand by and watch!

Do they know enough about the brain to mess with it?

You have to bear in mind, this is not feeding anything INTO the brain. Its not like people are suddenly going to get superhuman powers by having a chip implanted

This is simply reading the brains signals which several companies have done before. The only reason this is news is because its Musk doing it

Its just a port for reading human brain signals and translating them into cursor movements

It doesn't do anything to the brain itself
