how do sites know you are using ad blockers

I was testing to see if ad blockers can be detected and sure thing some sites tell you please remove the ad blocker to support us. How the hell do sites know you have an ad blocker on Chrome?

Tumblr for one detects it.

Well your browser type, browser language, IP are all tracked plus sites place cookies that should not be too difficult for them to know.

Actually its pretty easy with javascript

The adds are loaded in iframes and using a bit of javascript, they will pass a signal back to the main page once the add has loaded

The main page will listen for that signal and if it doesn't receive anything after so many seconds then it knows youve got an add blocker

if that div is not there after page load then ads are being blocked

yep thats another good way. They tend to scan for the words like ads, banners, promo etc

A few years ago we learnt not to put all your banners in a folder called /banners/ because add blockers would spot that and block all your affiliate adds

Good point I have seen this posted before, do not put your banners in a directory named 'BANNERS'

Just an idea what words do these ad blockers scan for on a page, I assume banners and ads are two, any others you can think of.

Once the big sites get into telling their users not to use ad blockers it will help us all out.

Not mentioning the site but there was an adult forum promoting an ad blocker on there.Members complained enough and they took down the banner.
