You can not beat WP for what it does and it's free why do you need some thing else.

Use Wordpress it is updated regularly, works fine, there are stacks of themes and plugins for free.................

If you can do your own html designs it is a great option, most of us can not so I say stick with WordPress.

Yep, you're right. It's cool once you get used to it but it does have a steeper learning curve than WordPress. It is easier that notepad. lol. He asked.

Just make your own CMS with php/html/css/js/etc. Basically the same thing and if you know what you're doing, you'll get rid of a lot of fat code.
..if you don't want to spend all that time on it, though, use Wordpress. :p
