I'm using Maria. Basically the same thing. I can't remember all the details but the reason Maria came about is there was some concern about mySQL future availability. For free that is. Google it. Why Maria? The guy named it after his kid. If you do upgrade it, you might want to bump up your mySQL to the most current version 1st before you leap. It's easy to do in WHM if you run cPanel.

They both come for free which is a good thing since we all need one or the other.

Don;t you just love free software especially god ones tat are tested and updated regularly.
what would be the reason to switch to mariadb if you are already using mysql?

Either one is good enough for the tasks they were designed for

In all my years online I have always used mysql and will keep using it. It's free it works no plan to try another one for the heck of it.
Any hosts here want to suggest their 2 cents on which to go with?
