mysql is what i always used and will stick with it

I'm using Maria. Basically the same thing. I can't remember all the details but the reason Maria came about is there was some concern about mySQL future availability. For free that is. Google it. Why Maria? The guy named it after his kid. If you do upgrade it, you might want to bump up your mySQL to the most current version 1st before you leap. It's easy to do in WHM if you run cPanel.

Did you have to rename any entries in WP for the location of the database?

Nope. Didn't have to do a thing.

what would be the reason to switch to mariadb if you are already using mysql?

What if you just keep on using the same version of mysql, what are the down sides.
